March’s ‘newest’ club – The Rookswood Club - is to be opened officially by the Mayor of March this weekend.
The re-branded club is to be opened by Mayor Rob Skoulding on Saturday January 30.
Formerly the March Royal British Club, the club is in an old Grade Two listed building owned by the members next to the river on West End. It has been a club since 1946 and was originally set up for veterans of the armed services.
Last year, following a vote by all members, the club disaffiliated from the Royal British Legion in much the same way as clubs in Whittlesey and St Ives.
It remains, however, the headquarters of Legion branches in March, the Remembrance Day and Poppy Appeal bases. It is also closely associated with March Cruising Club and is the home to the March Model Railway Club, March Camera Club, and March Radio Society.
The Club will continue to fund raise for the Legion but will now also be able to support local deserving causes. It remains a private members club and memberships are available.
The Chairman Diane Bower said: “I am so pleased that we are having our formal opening and look forward to our Club developing in the future whilst remaining family friendly. Our membership has already increased from last year and we welcome anyone thinking of joining to pop in and have a chat. Our subscription this year is only £6 although new members are required to pay a additional one-off share fee of £1.”
