More than six decades separates the oldest and youngest participants who have signed up to take part in a unique charity event taking place in April.
The Ouse Washes Experience, being run in aid of Magpas Helimedix and nominated Rotary charities, will see participants set out on a 16km sponsored bike ride and run on a previously unused track adjacent to the Old Bedford River between Mepal Bridge and Welney.
The non-competitive event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 6, and is hoped to raise £10,000.
This event is designed to have universal appeal, attracting the young and the old alike, and the youngest rider to sign up to date is six-year-old Xander Brown, from Ely, who has special permission from him mum Michelle to join the fun.
She said: “He rode eight miles when he was just five-years-old so I am sure the 15k will be fine.”
Ely artist Ted Coney, the oldest to sign up so far, plans to celebrate his 70th birthday by riding from Mepal Bridge to Welney on his vintage bike, which he says he has had for almost 40 years.
Ted said: “I have always used it to cycle for work and still do - commuting by train with it to Cambridge three days a week. My most ambitious cycle ride so far, was 10 years ago when I went Scotland to make a painting about being sixty.
“I am hoping to do the Ouse Washes ride as part of my 70th birthday celebrations, which will have been the week before.”
The event is being organised by the Ely Hereward Rotary Club in association with Cambridgeshire Acre, OWLP, Mepal Outdoor Centre, Environment Agency and RSPB
