KIND-hearted knitters from March have been busy making items to help save the lives of small children.

Hundreds of jerseys have been made for the Feed The Children campaign organised by Churches Together in March. Cot blankets and single bed blankets have also been knitted.

The appeal for items closed on Friday with a coffee morning at the town's Trinity Church. Knitters took along their efforts and the event helped to raise funds to transport the garments to the countries where they are most needed.

The Rev Pam Bayliss, chairman of Churches Together in March, said 554 jerseys, 21 cot blankets and six bed blankets had been knitted and £354.12p raised for transport.

"This is a fantastic result from Churches Together in March plus all the other kind folk in the surrounding villages who have dug out a pair of knitting needles and joined us," she said.

"The jerseys go to small children in African countries where night-time temperature plummets and they can die from hypothermia.

"We are really thrilled at the response which will help save young lives.
