A couple from Chatteris were left devastated after returning from holiday to find their house had been burgled – and two cherished World War One medals had been stolen.
Joyce Young and her husband, David, had left their home in Green Park, Chatteris, to go on a short holiday, but returned after their daughter informed them they had been burgled on Friday February 20.
The couple returned to find the back door to their bungalow had been smashed with a concrete brick, and thieves had stolen a pair of war medals belonging to Mrs Young’s father, along with several items of jewellery.
Mrs Young said: “We’d only gone away for a few days like we always do and we got the call on the Friday that we’d been burgled.
“Whoever did it smashed through the rear of our bungalow with a piece of concrete. There was glass all over the room.”
The medals were awarded to Mrs Young’s father after he served in three campaigns in the First World War.
Mrs Young added: “They actually took three medals all told, but fortunately one dropped out of the box and onto the bed.”
“The medals weren’t out on show. They went through everything. The medals have a lot of sentimental value.”
The burglary is believed to have taken place between Wednesday February 18 and Thursday February 19.
The missing medals are inscribed with the names ‘H.C Stinson’ and ‘W.F Stinson,’ as well as the number ‘95105.’
Police are appealing for witnesses, and anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting incident 203 of February 19 or contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, via crimestoppers-uk.org or on 0800 555 111.
