THIEVES left empty handed after they failed to break into a safe in the ticket office at a Fenland railway station.

A Mercedes-Benz car that was parked at March Station was also targeted during the raid which happened at around 5am today.

British Transport Police (BTP) are looking at CCTV images as part of their investigation and are appealing for witnesses.

A BTP spokesman said: “BTP is appealing for information and witnesses following a burglary at March rail station.

“Officers were called to the station on April 1 after a report of someone having forced entry to the station.

“The incident was reported at 5.15am after one of the station alarms was set off.

“It appears that someone broke in some time after 5.50pm the previous evening, when the premises was last secured by a member of staff, before trying to access the station safe. At this stage it is believed the person left empty-handed.

“We are currently conducting local enquiries to gather further information and to try and establish who may have been responsible.

“If you have any information about the break-in, or saw any suspicious activity near to March station overnight, we want to hear from you.”

A National Express East Anglia spokesman said: “The British Transport Police are investigating an attempted break-in at March station in the early hours of this morning. Customers are advised to buy their tickets on the train.”

The station entrance and ticket office were closed this morning while police carried out investigations, but have since re-opened. Services through the station were unaffected.
