The call came as the hospital has been experiencing higher than usual acute admissions for the time of year.
A spokesman said the issue has been exacerbated by staff sickness and slow discharge of patients who are fit to return home.
She said: “Please remember that A&E is for life-threatening emergencies only. For everything else, please seek advice from your GP, pharmacy, minor injury and illness unit or call @NHS111.”
