THE writing is on the wall for Council Tax defaulters.
Fenland Council has issued 658 summonses to recover £32,000 in Council Tax. The cases will be heard by Fenland magistrates on Thursday February 1 and each summons comes with an additional £50 price tag as a court cost.
This is the latest batch of summonses against people who have resisted all encouragements to pay their Council Tax.
The next batch of summonses will go out on Thursday February 8 and the council is urging non-payers to come forward and pay by Tuesday February 6 in order to save themselves a £50 cost on top of their Council Tax arrears.
The council is also issuing a statutory demand for bankruptcy on 10 people who have steadfastly failed to pay their Council Tax.
Council Tax defaulters owe more than £30,000 - money which is vital for the delivery of much-needed council services.
Councillor Fred Yeulett, portfolio holder for enforcement, said: "The writing is on the wall for Council Tax dodgers. We will not allow people to jeopardise our ability to deliver much-needed services to the law abiding residents of Fenland.
"Anyone thinking of not paying their tax should be in no doubt that we will pursue them through the courts, even if it means initiating bankruptcy proceedings. Ultimately, it will be cheaper for people to pay what they owe. Failure to pay means they will face court charges on top of their arrears.
