The incident occurred on the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire border at Tipps End near Welney. Tyre marks show the path the lorry took before crossing the verge and ploughing into a nearby Fenland drain.

The driver left the road and ended up in the ditch almost at the exact spot where a similar incident had occurred in January 2016 when a lorry heading to Wales from the British Sugar plant at Wissington lost control after touching the verge.

The driver of the Biffa lorry involved in today’s accident was shaken but not injured and chatted to police officers whilst waiting for emergency rescue services to begin retrieving his vehicle.

A police officer at the scene said the softness of the verge and its proximity to a ditch made this as challenging stretch of road for all drivers.

Based on previous experiences, police suspect it could be at least 24 hours before specialist tow trucks are able to get the Biffa lorry removed from the ditch.
