FENLAND Council has referred more people in need of grants under the Government's Warmfront programme than any other authority in Cambridgeshire.

The council has a big thank-you from Eaga, which runs the Warmfront initiative, providing grants to people in receipt of a range of disabilities who are making their homes more energy efficient.

The grants are aimed at priority groups - people with disabilities, families with children under 16 and people over 60 who are also in receipt of a benefit payment.

Fenland referred 481 people to Eaga for up to £2,700 of grants, the highest in the county. The fact that such a high number of people came forward to the council to apply for the Warmfront grants is a measure of the hugely successful customer-focussed approach for which Fenland has achieved national Charter Mark status.

The council helped people in need of support across Fenland to receive a total of £245,000 over the last year. Fenland was also praised for the way it screened applications before they are put forward to Eaga for consideration for funding.

Fenland had considerably fewer applications rejected because they did not meet the criteria. While Fenland had 88 applications rejected, South Cambridgeshire had 194 rejected, East Cambridgeshire 126 and Cambridge City 153 rejected.

By working with Eaga, the council has been able to use its Cashback Scheme in many cases, to top up any works that exceed £2,700. This scheme is available to any householder in Fenland who is installing energy efficient measures such as new central heating boilers, solar water heating, as well as loft and cavity wall insulation.

Councillor Jill Tuck, portfolio holder for Customer First, said: "Our customer focus has many hidden benefits and attracting more people than anyone else in the county to apply for grants is just one of them. We are delighted to have been able to help so many people improve the energy efficiency of their homes and reduce their bills too.
