ELECTION fever might not be an altogether accurate depiction of life in Fenland at the moment, but in Chatteris an intriguing debate is soon to begin - the no small matter of who might become the town's first mayor.
Councillor Florence Newell, irrespective of the outcome of the elections, will be standing down after 16 years as Town Council chairman and her replacement will henceforward be the mayor.
"We did the paperwork some four years ago," Florence says. "However, I never did want to be a mayor, I was happy as chairman. But times change, so a mayor it will now be."
Florence, of course, is keeping her counsel on whom she would prefer to take office.
