SHOPPERS using the 15 rubbish tins in the centre of March could soon find many of them have been moved after they were labelled "under-performing" by council chiefs.

Fenland District Council says its intention is to "rationalise the situation as regards litter bin provision in Broad Street".

Mark Mathews, environmental services manager, hopes to begin replacement work next month to ensure "all the bins within Broad Street are of a uniform design and condition in order to improve the appearance of this part of March".

Mr Mathews wants to replace "the rather untidy looking" round metal bins.

"The opportunity will also be taken to remove, or relocate, underperforming bins with due consideration to pavement users and cleansing requirements," he says in a report to councillors.

He has drawn up detailed maps showing where the present bins are located, and indicating the positions they will be moved to.

"The total number remains the same, six are removed, nine are replaced and six are located in new sites," he says.

"This should enable the better visual impact that we aspire to, whilst also improving the provision of bins at points where there currently is no provision."

Mr Mathews is hoping Tesco will agree to sponsor some of the bins, and he hopes Sainsbury might agree to provide two litter bins for the Mill Road approach road.

The proposals include:

* Moving two bins from Fenland Walk and from the pavement in Sainsbury car park, and replacing them with "best quality bins" from Broad Street

* Removing the burnt-out bin in the lorry park and replacing it with a relocated bin from Broad Street

* Relocating a refurbished bin at the entrance of Darthll Road car park.
