FIRE crews were called out to deal with flooding in March after a heavy downpour on Wednesday evening.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service received calls to seven streets in the town after drains failed to cope with the sudden heavy rainfall.

A fire service spokesman said there had been reports of cars travelling down the flooded streets and the movement of the vehicles had pushed water into properties along the road. Many residents were reported to have used buckets to clear the water from their homes.

In some incidents the fire service was unable to help because its equipment can be used only when there is more than six inches of water.

Firefighters pumped water from a property in Burrowmoor Road. Other parts of the town affected by flooding included Cavalry Drive, Woodlands Avenue, Alpha Street, Morton Avenue, Elwyn Road and Chandler's Way.

The fire service began receiving calls from anxious residents around mid-afternoon following a heavy storm at 4pm.
