CHATTERIS is likely to have a mayor instead of a town council chairman after the election in May.
The change will leave Whittlesey as the only town in Fenland without a mayor.
Councillors believe that putting the town on a par with neighbouring March and Wisbech will give it extra prestige.
Current chairman, Councillor Florence Newell, says her idea has been well received and supported by other councillors.
She believes Chatteris has been ignored at some civic events because other towns do not recognise a chairman as having the same status as a mayor.
After a meeting of the town council, Cllr Newell said: "They were quite supportive and they think it is a good idea to upgrade Chatteris.
"Nothing will happen until after the May election but the clerk is going to make enquiries as to what steps we have to take.
