Steve Barclay MP has raised concerns about the potential axing of a ‘vital’ bus service between Chatteris and Huntingdon.

In October Stagecoach denied rumours about the proposed suspension of the Stagecoach number 35 bus service.

Instead, they said they were looking at “under performing” buses and insisting no decision had been made.

Mr Barclay said: “Constituents have raised concern in regard to the proposed suspension of the Stagecoach East no. 35 bus service which connects Chatteris to Huntingdon.

“Given the large quantity of new houses being built in the area, I too am concerned that a vital public transport link for schools, colleges and work is being considered for suspension.

“Local councillors Steve Count and Anne Hay are working with Stagecoach to assess patronage levels and investigate other ways the services can be maintained.”

In October Andy Campbell, managing director of Stagecoach East, said: “We are looking at a number of services that have been under performing - but discussions with the county council are ongoing and it is too early to say what the future holds.”

Last year Stagecoach pulled the 1.20pm bus from the 35 service which meant people had to hang around for an hour in Chatteris after work to wait to catch the X9 home to March.

Currently, the number 35 bus starts at 6.52am and runs every two hours until the evening.

Local resident Paula Robertson said on social media: “This is the main service that runs from March through to Wimblington /Doddington/Chatteris then through to Huntingdon.

“Many people use this service at peak times, i.e. early in the morning and again at evening rush hour.

“I agree that they aren’t full during the middle of the day but peak time services are busy.

“Try seeking employment when you can’t drive or afford a car – as it stands it’s more than difficult.

“No buses on Sundays, none in the evening either makes it nigh on impossible to secure a job.”

In October a Cambridgeshire County Council spokesman said: “We’re aware that Stagecoach is looking at some of their local bus routes.

“Discussions with the company are at an early stage but further information will be provided once details are available.”
