LIFE has moved on for March man Neil Green and he has a family of his own. But, when possible, he still avoids driving along the Forty Foot Bank, which claimed his fiancee's life almost 30 years ago.In May 1978, only child Karen Abblitt crashed into the drain near Chatteris while driving to meet Neil in an Austin Mini her father had bought her that day.Our campaign to improve safety on the notorious road, which has claimed five lives in six weeks, prompted Neil to speak openly. He said: "I still avoid the Forty Foot drain whenever possible. When something tragic like that happens in your life, you never forget it."Neil, of West End, March, said: "Every time I pick up the paper and read there has been another accident along that bloody drain it turns my stomach. After all these years, it's disgusting something hasn't been done."Last week, Karen's parents Tom and Shirley Abblitt also backed the safety campaign we are running with our sister paper The Hunts Post.It seems a huge section of our readership feels the same way because the campaign has prompted a record response.Hundreds of people have made it clear they want their voices heard.Seventy per cent of those who contacted us want immediate action to improve safety on the notorious road. The results so far are:- By text - 50 per cent want safety measures, 40 per cent want the road closed and 10 per cent want no change.- On our website - more than 43 per cent want safety improvements, 45 per cent want no change and 12 per cent want the road closed. The poll runs for another week. To record your vote text the word TIMES followed by a space and then your vote - either "close" (indicating you want the road closed), "safety" (you want safety precautions installed) or "no change". Then send your vote to 82189. Texts cost just 25p plus your operator's normal charge.
