RAIL accident investigators have released the first findings of a report into a crash which killed a farmworker.

David Muffett died when his tractor was hit by a train at an unmanned level crossing in Black Horse Drove, between Downham Market and Littleport, in October.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch said the condition of the track, train and signalling equipment did not appear to have contributed to the accident.

Its report also appears to rule out any train driver error or malfunction at the level crossing mechanism.

A spokesman for the Government department said : "The investigation is still proceeding and at some stage there will be a final report."

The death of Mr Muffett prompted calls for an urgent review of rail safety at unmanned level crossings.

His tractor was hit by the 10.45am King's Cross to King's Lynn WAGN service on October 19.

The father-of-two, from Ten Mile Bank, had been trying to get over the track with a trailer when the accident happened.

There were no injuries to the 30 passengers or crew on the train, which came to a stop about half-a-mile further down the track.
