Trees in Manea Pit will be protected after a preservation order has been put in place following fears that dozens could be felled for the installation of an “otter proof” fence.
Villagers urged councillors to support the TPO as concerns about the “natural openness and beauty” of the pit could be lost.
Residents attended the planning meeting at Fenland District Council on Wednesday (August 15) to voice their opinion.
Supporter Christopher Harrison said: “We need this order in place to protect the woodland and environment. We ask councillors to please listen to us as this is of importance to the area.”
Eighteen letters of support were also received.
Councillor Florence Newell said she had been contacted by members of the public raising their concerns about the area and the need for the TPO to be in place.
All councillors voted in favour of the order.
It is claimed that the “otter proof” fence will protect against the fish population.
