TWELVE wind turbines delivered to a site at Tick Fen, near Chatteris, should be up by Christmas.

After testing in the New Year, it is hoped they will be fully operational by March 2007.

Planning consent was granted in 2004 and a contract awarded to Repower UK by Fenland Wind Farms Ltd, part of the EDF Group.

Made in Germany, the turbines arrived at Immingham on Humberside and have been brought to the Red Tile Wind Farm in sections. Work began some months ago on installation of the foundations, infrastructure and electrical work.

The site is unusual in that nine turbines will be on land owned by Cambridgeshire County Council and three on neighbouring farmers' land.

Planning supervisor for the £15million project is Bristol-based company Wind Prospect, which has also masterminded similar developments at Stags Holt near March, and Glassmoor Bank, Whittlesey.

The two-megawatt turbines are being erected by a team of 15 from construction company McNicholas. They provide electricity to power a town the size of March or Chatteris.
