Ivan Chapman, of Horsegate Gardens, Chatteris, is charged with attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent to do grievous bodily harm following the incident in the cul de sac in which he lived on Sunday afternoon.

Chapman’s nephew, Kevin Shaw, of March, suffered head injuries and his teenage fiancée Sophie Siggins received leg injuries in the collision at around 3pm.

The road was sealed off while emergency medics worked for up to an hour and a half giving treatment on the roadside at Horsegate Gardens before the couple were taken in separate ambulances to hospital.

A resident said the road was sealed off and nobody was allowed to enter or leave until forensics had carried out their investigations.

Two ambulances and a Magpas senior paramedic rushed to the scene at about 3pm on Sunday where they gave treatment at the scene before taking the couple to Hinchingbrooke Hospital.

The couple were said by the East of England ambulance service to be suffering “non life threatening injuries” following the incident.

The alarm was raised by three teenagers who are said to be shaken up by the incident as they watched neighbours bring out blankets and sit with the pair while waiting for emergency services to arrive.

A parent of one of the teenagers said her son and two friends came upon the scene moments after it happened.

She said her son dialled 999 whilst a teenage girl with him rushed to administer first aid to the injured couple.

Sophie Siggins has a broken leg but Mr Shaw’s is thought to have more serious head injuries.

The parent added: “My son told me that one of the girl’s shoes was sent flying across the road following the collision. She started screaming very loudly and was clearly in considerable pain.”
