COUNTY councillors have called for unity to find a solution to the growing concerns over safety along the Forty Foot.Councillor John Reynolds, cabinet member for environment and community services, said: "Everyone should unite together regardless of party politics to prevent any more lives being lost." He was receiving a petition signed by 1,800 residents, and council members from Ramsey, Chatteris, Doddington, and Warboys. It was presented by Ramsey Town Councillor Ray Powell and Chatteris Town Councillor Chris Howes. An additional petition of 149 signatures was also presented from residents of Benwick. After the cabinet had discussed the petition Cllr Reynolds said: "I would like to thank the petitioners for bringing their concerns to us. "I would like to reassure them that the county council is equally concerned by the accident record along this road, and that we have already started a review of options that could improve safety."We pledge to investigate and look for solutions, but motorists must play their part and drive sensibly down this road.Addressing the cabinet, Cllr Howes said: "We have come to plead with you to do something to address the appalling safety record of the Forty Foot."We need to educate and enforce motorists to travel along the Forty Foot at safer speeds. "However, we must also make the road safer, so that when an accident occurs, the results are not fatal."We've got to cut the number of accidents and ensure that when an accident does occur, people don't die.
