VIDEO and audio of a Wimblington woman receiving a surprise visit from a radio station, a troupe of cheerleaders and an Elvis impersonator are released today.

Carly Bateman, a finance officer at Gorefield Primary School, Wisbech, helped Wimblington to win the title of Cambridgeshire’s most intelligent area in Heart 102.7 radio station’s breakfast show competition Big Town Showdown.

She was the unbeaten champion after successfully answering all 10 general knowledge questions in a record time of 32 seconds.

Over the past thee months of the radio contest, listeners in towns and villages around March, Chatteris and Wisbech have been battling with the rest of Cambridgeshire to show that the place they live really is the brightest.

Freddie Scherer. Programme Controller at Heart, said Mrs Bateman was thrilled with the unexpected visit.

Hes said: “It was great. She had no idea what was coming.

“We knocked on her door at 8am and she was greeted by a producer with a microphone and we then brought out the cheerleaders and Elvis.

“She was quite overwhelmed by the whole thing.”

There are already plans in place to run further competitions next year which Mr Scherer said brought out the competitive spirit in the rival towns and villages.

He said: “People like to fly the flag for the places they live and represent them with pride.”
