An unprecedented auction of nearly 200 vintage tractors that had been amassed by East Anglian farmer and entrepreneur Paul Rackham has seen one of its highlights sold for £150,000.

An auction took place on Saturday at Camp Farm at Roudham, near Thetford of the tractor collection of Mr Rackham, which is believed to be the biggest of its kind in the country.

About 1,000 people attended the auction which saw a bid of £150,000 accepted for a 1918 Holt 75 crawler tractor.

The tractor is the only sole surviving example of its kind that served in the British Army.

Another notable auction saw a 1954 Marshall MP6 six cylinder diesel tractor auctioned off for £80,500, a sum Sharon Hamilton of Cambridge-based auctioneers Cheffins said could be a record price for the company.

Mr Rackham, 79, spent 25 year restoring the tractors and has said he is disposing of his vast collection so he can focus on a new challenge as his family did not share his same passion for vintage machinery.

It was estimated the auction, which also involved auctioneers Clarke and Simpson, could make £2m.
