VEHICLES of all shapes and sizes from a bygone age have arrived in a Fenland village for a steamy weekend.

Thousands of visitors are expected in Walpole St Andrew for the annual steam rally and country fair which raises money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Last year’s event saw 2,000 go to the charity and organisers hope this year will be just as good.

A Hurricane and Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will be making an appearance tomorrow at 4pm for the first time.

One of the organisers, Mark Davey, said the flypast would be a highlight of the weekend.

“We are really looking forward to that, it should be something special,” he said.

The rally began 11 years ago and has been growing in popularity ever since.

This year some 400 exhibitors will be taking part, with vehicles ranging from huge steam engines to classic cars, motorbikes and camper vans.

There will also be the chance for young visitors to take a ride on Thomas the Tank Engine.

“We have got lots going on throughout the weekend and there will be something for everyone,” said Mr Davey.

Arena attractions include pony racing, marching bands and greyhounds.

Tonight will see the return of the Walpole’s Got Talent competition – with entries accepted this afternoon ready for an evening showdown.

“It’s popular – you’d be amazed,” said Mr Davey.

The rally will also have a traditional funfair along with a variety of stalls and other entertainment – including a beer tent.

Admission is 5 for adults, 3 concessions and 15 for a family ticket of two adults and two children.

Parking is free and the gates are open from 10am to 5pm on both days.
