WHEN two terrified dogs ran amok among the traffic in recent thunder, lightning and torrential rain in Leverington, it was council dog warden Terry Ball who braved the elements to round them up and take them to safety.

Responding rapidly to a call from a member of the public, Terry rushed out to capture the dogs that were endangering themselves and other vehicles as they ran around on the wet road, terrified by the lashing rain and thunder and lightning flashes.

Terry managed to capture the dogs, avoiding the traffic, and took them to the council's contract kennels in Wisbech. Fortunately, they have both been given chip implants and their details were soon called up on the computer and the worried owners notified they had been found safe and well - if rather wet and frightened.

Terry was also called out to collect a puppy playing with the traffic in Chatteris High Street. This time it was the police who came to the rescue. They handed the lively bundle of fun over to Terry, who took it to the kennels. On this occasion it was not long before the worried owners called Terry to be assured the animal was safe and well.

Councillor Peter Murphy, portfolio holder for Streets Ahead, said: "Rescuing strays is a major part of the dog warden's role and it is a great comfort to local people that he is out there and on call should any dog be in danger or be lost. I am delighted that people are increasingly understanding that they are able to turn to the council if they have an animal that has wandered off and is lost. It is a tremendous service. It is also heartening to note that two of the lost dogs were traced because they had been 'chipped'."

LOST AND FOUND: Dog warden Terry Ball with a stray dog.
