For an event that relies on volunteer drivers and bus owners giving of their time – and vehicles – for free, this year’s Busfest at Whittlesey achieved great success.

“Out of 79 planned services 76 of those ran as advertised even if a tad late,” said a spokesman reflecting on another highly successful day.

Organisers proudly called it “the biggest Busfest yet, a view echoed by the hundreds who gathered in the town centre on Sunday for the event on every bus buffs calendar.

Partnered with the Ramsey Classic Car Show, Busfest offered free rides from Whittlesey to the car event that featured more than 80 exhibits.

One fan of the event said on social media: “Well who knew that buses could be so much fun.

“Absolutely loved travelling round on the buses today at fenland bus fest, the 1979 open top bus was the winner for us all though.”

Another said: “Wife and I had a great day, trip to Ramsey to the classic car show, back to Whittlesey on an open top double decker, delicious Sunday lunch and a pint at the New Crown, nipped into the Bull for another.”

The Busfest spokesman added: ““It was a great event in brilliant weather with lots of buses, what more could anyone want?

“We had some lovely comments from people who came along. We’re planning an even better Busfest for next year.”
