WHITTLESEY and District Lions Club raised more than £3,000 from their Santa collections over Christmas, which will be spent on keeping children safe on the roads.

The charity’s volunteers, helped by members of Whittlesey Cricket Club, fundraised in Whittlesey, Eastrea, Coates and Turves.

Lynn Palmer, Whittlesey and District Lions Club fundraiser, said: “We would like to thank everyone for their very generous donations during the Christmas Santa collections.

“The 2012 collections equalled that of 2011 and we appreciate that in the current economic climate this was a difficult target to achieve.

“In the last year we supplied all primary school clubs with reflective jackets to keep children safe and then we went a step further and approached child minders to see if they were interested.

“We had a good response and hopefully we will get jackets ordered and dished out soon.”

Mrs Palmer says the charity, which has been running for 23 years and is made up of a small team of committed volunteers, is always looking for more Fenland causes to support.

She said: “If anyone knows of a project that we could get involved in, we will be very interested in the details. “This can be in the form of equipment for individuals, or groups. In fact any type of request will be considered.”

The Lions next fundraising event will be a race night at the POSH Club, London Road, Peterborough on February 22. Tickets, which cost £5 and include a Ploughman’s supper, can be purchased from Jones the Butchers on Broad Street Whittlesey or by ringing 01733 351405.

Whittlesey and District Lions meet on the second Monday of each month at the Letter B pub on Ramsey Road.
