A Whittlesey man has been awarded more than £13,000 of LEADER funding to deliver economic benefits to arable farming in the Fens.

Philip Bradshaw wanted to purchase a no tillage seed drill capable of working with all combinable crops in all types of soil conditions so that the crops could be produced at lower cost and with less damage to the environment.

The LEADER grant money helped him achieve this and he has been sharing his knowledge and experience with other local farmers at his open day.

“No till benefits are reduced costs of both establishment and inputs such as pesticides and fertiliser, while hopefully increasing yields and protecting and enhancing our soils,” said Philip.

“There is a significant amount of work involved in preparing an application, but the support from the local LEADER management team was excellent and very helpful.”
