Residents enjoyed a rousing sing along as The Hermitage in Whittlesey threw a party to celebrate the 70th anniversary of VE Day.

For many of them, it was a chance to reminisce about the Second World War.

Manager Judy Wilson said: “Our residents remember VE day very well, as most of them were in their 20s by then.

“They all say they remember the celebrations. Roly and Joyce Dedman remember visiting a friend in Bromley and going straight to Trafalgar Square on hearing the news where they said they have never ever seen such a crowd.

“Other residents told of street parties and celebrations, they remember youngsters having races in the fields and it being a great atmosphere.

“John Hill remembers a party on The Green in Coates. Another lady Beattie remembers she was at work in International Stores when the news was announced. Jessie remembers her and her friends all gathering by a monument in Irthlingborough.

“Sadly Mary Widgery remembers crying on the day, she saw her husband for one hour before he left to set sail to India as was a Royal Engineer and was going to a factory in Calcutta to make oil drums.

“We played all the old favourite songs and had a great sing along, everyone joined in and had a thoroughly good day. It was so nice to hear our residents reminisce 70 years on.”
