Quick thinking businessman Mark Twigg used towels, vegetable oil and some heavy-duty lifting equipment to free a Muntjac deer sandwiched between the gates of his home.

He and his wife spotted the deer today (Sat) and were worried he might suffer once they realised it couldn’t free itself.

So, armed with towels to cover its head, oil to free it, and a jack to prise apart gates, they set out on a rescue mission.

“Luckily someone was passing and got the other side of the gate to help us,” said Mark. “We had to place the towels around the deer because they can be quite lively animals and we didn’t want to get injured whilst rescuing it.”

He also took advice from people on a local Facebook page that advised a towel would settle the deer whilst it was being rescued.

The deer was quickly freed and ran off into woodland at Mr Twigg’s Whittlesey home.

“We have several deer coming into the woodland, but this is the first time one has got caught in the gates,” he said.

“I’m delighted we were able to get it freed. I’ve just been back out and seen the deer and it is running freely and seems to be none the worse for its adventure.”

Mr Twigg added: “He has now been saved; thankfully we oiled his head and jacked open the bars and pulled him through.

“He is now resting in our woodlands.”
