A flag designed by 11 year-old Alderman Jacobs School pupil Althea Waites has been flying proudly outside the House of Commons.

Her design, which incorporated the colours of three schools and the Whittlesey Straw Bear, was chosen for the national House of Commons 2015 Flag Project, which celebrates the 750th anniversary of the nation’s seat of government.

Althea’s was one of 80 flags designed by schoolchildren across the country that flew in Parliament Square. Althea and her family took a trip to see it there.

Now, the flag has been returned to its creator, with MP Steve Barclay serving as flag-bearer to personally deliver it.

Mr Barclay said: “It was lovely to have an opportunity to meet Althea and return her flag to school once it was lowered from outside the House of Commons.

“The project gave children an opportunity to learn about our country’s parliament and it democratic history, which dates back to the time of King John and the signing of Magna Carta.”
