A community group has given a makeover to a layby in their town.

Whittlesey Street Pride volunteers have completed a project to install an environmentally friendly and vandal-resistant picnic bench, three cycle racks and a litter bin in the layby in Ramsey Road, Whittlesey.

The bench is made from 2,000 recycled plastic bottles and weighs more than 150 kilograms. It is also set in concrete and designed in a way that provides easy access for wheelchair users.

Funding has come from the Glassmoor Bank wind turbine environmental fund and the group’s own resources.

It is the tenth “Gateway” project the group has carried out since it was set up 10 years ago. Members also regularly litterpick the layby and cut the grass.

Roy Gerstner, the group’s chairman, said: “It has been another fantastic team effort to get this project completed and we are very proud of our achievements. The bench is already well used and we have had lots of positive comments.”
