A FIRE which raged at a takeaway in Whittlesey for more than three hours this morning has been confirmed as arson.
Four fire crews were called to Ali’s Kebab, in Broad Street, after the roof was set alight at around 2am.
The turntable ladder was mobilised from Dogsthorpe as firefighters used breathing apparatus and hose reels to tackle the blaze.
The incident was brought under control and crews returned to base at around 5.25am.
Fire officers and Hertfordshire’s Fire Investigation Dog Team have been in Whittlesey today to investigate the cause of the blaze, which was confirmed as deliberate this afternoon.
Station Commander Martin Boome, who investigated the incident, said he was “amazed” that the fire had not spread further. Only limited damage was done to sections of the roof and part of the upstairs ceiling.
The incident has now been passed to Cambridgeshire Police. Anyone with information should contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
