People living in Otago Close and Otago Road have branded the action, believed to have been perpetrated by another resident, as ‘vandalism’ and have contacted local councillors over the issue.

One couple, who didn’t want to be named, said: “This is just vandalism, pure and simple. The person who allegedly did this was apparently fed-up with the noise from the colony of collared doves who lived in the trees. But the trees were home to all kinds of birds, and there would have been nests.

“It is illegal to damage nests and trees and hedges should not be cut down during the nesting season. We have reported it to the town council and our councillor has reported the matter to the police.”

The tree felling, which happened earlier this month, caused an outpouring of anger on the social media site Streetlife.
