Dog mess wars broke out in Wimblington when villagers said they were embarrassed by a poo-shaming map that hit national headlines, while the creator of the idea says she just wants to help clean up the streets.
Two rival poop crackdowns were launched in the same weekend in the Fen village - an interactive poo map and a parish council plan where responsible dog owners wear green ribbons.
While national journalists clamoured for news on #doodoo watch organisers were bombarded with emails by community groups from as far afield as Kuwait, asking for help to crack down on irresponsible dog owners.
Meanwhile, some said they are ashamed that Wimblington will be remembered forever as the dog dirt capital of Britain.
Amanda Carlin, one of the #doodoowatch creators said: “Dog mess is a problem the world over. The nature of the story means some of the media coverage at first seemed like a joke, but actually nobody likes stepping in dog mess, it’s a real problem.”

An animal lover with a Yorkshire Terrier called Molly, Amanda said she was doing something positive to encourage dog owners to bag it and bin it.
However, one person wrote on social media: “So embarrassed. Had all my friends messaging me who don’t live in the area asking me is this where I live? They think it’s hilarious and disgusting, like that’s ALL Wimblington is about.”

Another said: “Why not publicise both initiatives nationally? That would be collaboration.”
One person said they could not work out how a green ribbon scheme would work.
“Unless you have a micro chip in green ribbon how is it helping clean up dog mess?”
One commented: “TV crew are currently in the village. We can only hope this isn’t more dreadful and shameful publicity since being crowned dog poo capital of England.”
One commented: “You’re in the doodoo now, there goes the house prices.”
In support of #doodoowatch one said: “What a shame that someone who is trying to do something about dog poo in your village is being vilified.
Another said: “How is this embarrassing? Our village is being acknowledged as a forward thinking village.”
Another added: “The worse thing to come out of this is how easily a couple of well meaning initiatives have managed to divide a village community.”
The debate closer: “Today’s news is tomorrow’s puppy training mat.”
