A FUNERAL service for Winifred Maud Wood, of Chatteris, known to friends and family as Aunt Win, takes place today at Chatteris Parish Church, followed by cremation at Peterborough.

Mrs Wood was born at Floods Ferry. Her father worked on the land and the family lived at various farms in the area. Among other things she remembered being taken to school at Benwick in a horse and cart driven by a Mr Shepperson.

During her teens she lived at Sawtry and there she met her future husband, Reginald Wood. They married in April 1935 and moved to Chatteris. Mr Wood then took land work with Mr Morris along Sixteen Foot Bank and the couple moved to their new home opposite Honey Bridge. At that time Mrs Wood worked on the land for Mr Ruston at Boots Bridge Farm. They moved back to Chatteris during the fifties, having bought 8 Bridge Street complete with about one-and-a-half acres of land. They started a small business selling strawberries and vegetables at the front gate. She continued to work on the land, then in the employ of Mr Slender. They had no children, but when Mr Wood's mother died leaving a four-year-old daughter Joan, they took her into their home and raised her. They retired to Fairview Drive, Chatteris, where they lived until Mr Wood's death in 1988. Two years later, at the age of 78, Mrs Wood went to live with her nephew, Councillor Ray German at London Road, Chatteris, when his wife Brenda was taken ill, in order to look after them both. When Brenda's health returned, Mrs Wood chose to continue living with them and make it her home also. She continued in good health until a year ago when carers were employed morning and night.
