As the American President continues his tour of the UK, Donald Trump’s arrival in the country hasn’t been welcomed by everyone.

With national protests taking place today and across the weekend, it wasn’t just the thousands marching through London that aired their views as more than a dozen Wisbech residents made their voices heard at lunchtime.

Sue Dockett, secretary of the Wisbech, March and District Trade Council, said: “This is part of a whole national demonstration today against Donald Trump’s visit to Great Britain.

“We’re against the hatred and bigotry that he’s been spouting across America, and he’s trying to bring here to Britain as well.

“He’s supported by a whole range of far right and white supremacist crews that have got access to the White House.

“We don’t want that. We’re not a country of hatred and violence; if you go back 50 years in America, we thought the country was going back.

“We don’t want that division and hate here. We want our country to be united.”

The protest, she says, shows that Wisbech is standing together.

“I had a letter from America at the weekend saying that tens of millions of people are standing against Trump – but standing together, we are louder.

“We don’t have to say anything – just the fact that we’re standing up and saying ‘no’ is enough.”

As the protestors made their way through the town from the Clarkson Memorial – holding ‘Peace’ and ‘Build Bridges Not Walls’ flags walking towards Wisbech police station – the group met some objectors who supported Trump’s policies.

One objector said: “Donald Trump has done a lot better than our Governemnet. He does what he says he will do. These people think that just because the Government says that he is bad, then he is bad.

“But he is over here to do business; he’s not the English Prime Minister.”

Elsewhere across the UK there has been support for Trump; in the north of England, particularly among those who support Brexit.

Sean Finlay, of the Wisbech Peace Forum, who led the protest, however said: “We’re here to demonstrate that Wisbech is a part of a national protest against a president who has demeaned the office of presidency.

“He doesn’t represent the American people I’m sure. And we want to say ‘enough is enough’ – we believe in building bridges, not walls.

“We hope the protest is going to reach out to others to show that, even in a little place like Wisbech, if people can come out and protest then this man has got to get the message.”

Mr Trump landed at Stansted with his wife Melania on Air Force One at 1.50pm before flying onto London.

The couple were met by International Trade Secretary Liam Fox, the Lord Lieutenant of Essex Jenny Tolhurst, the chief operating officer at Stansted Airport Brad Miller, and Woody Johnson, the United States Ambassador to the UK.

President Trump left Air Force One and was ushered straight aboard a waiting helicopter with his wife as the media gallery watched on.

The president and first lady are to meet the Queen this Friday afternoon.
