The refurbished Boyall’s Fish & Chips, in Norfolk Street, opened last Friday (November 9) after former owner Christopher Boyall and his partner Irena decided to take back the shop.

Mr Boyall’s parents started the business in 1936 and Christopher, now 70, bought it in 1972 and ran it until 2000.

The pair even met top chef Jamie Oliver to share tips and tricks of the trade in preparation for the new opening.

Christopher, who has spent the last 18 years renovating property in Eastern Europe, said: “I have been renting the property to people since 2000 but I don’t think many have realised what it’s like to run a fish shop.

“But Irena and I thought it would be a good idea to take it back and make a success of it again.

“Since opening we have had lots of people from the past come back and visit us and share memories of the old times, it’s been very nice.”

Boyall’s is currently only open on Friday teatime from 3pm to 8pm and Saturday lunch from 12pm to 2pm.

Christopher is also the engineer the behind the frying machines in the shop.

He added: “I personally wanted to run them in my own shop before selling to anybody and they have worked perfectly well and are now sold all over Europe.

“I have put fish and chips into so many areas where people go to events.

“I’ve kept a scrapbook of articles from the past about the shop and in 1984 the Wisbech Standard wrote an article about my ambition for fish and chips which has happened.

“We live in a changing world. So it’s time to move on again.”
