Budding fruit growing teenagers have joined a national tree planting scheme.
Wisbech Grammar School students, using funds raised from the Ghoul School Halloween event, bought five trees through the Fruitshare scheme.
Year 10 pupils on a food short course and A Level food and nutrition students worked together to plant a pair of pear trees, two apple trees and a plum tree in the school grounds.
Head of food and nutrition Alison Sloan said: “The idea is to get children to eat more fruit. They can take ownership and they are more likely to eat fruit if they can see where it is coming from.”
The Fruitshare scheme is backed by TV chef and food campaigner Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
He said: “I find the idea that the next generation could be growing more fruit, eating more fruit and cooking their fruit in a much more creative way incredibly exciting. I want to do what we can to make that happen.”
