A motorcyclist suffered serious injuries yesterday in a collision with a car which closed the A47 near Wisbech.

The crash took place at about 8.45pm, at its junction with Chapel Lane.

A 31-year-old man from Wisbech was injured when his Yamaha YZF1000 motorcycle collided with a Volkswagen Golf. He was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge, with serious injuries.

The A47 was closed between Guyhirn and Wisbech until shortly after midnight.

The air ambulance was among emergency crews called to the scene.

A spokesman for the East Anglian Air Ambulance said: “Medics were called to a road traffic accident on the A47 near Wisbech, where a motorcyclist had been seriously injured.

“Captain Dave Kelly flew Anglia Two to the location, landing just after 9pm. Dr Monojit Choudhury and CCP Gary Spitzer treated the patient on scene for limb-threatening injuries, before he was packaged and airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

“His condition is described as serious.”

The driver of the Golf was not injured.

Earlier in the day a second motorcyclist suffered serious injuries in a crash in south Cambridgeshire.

A 25-year-old from Baldock, Hertfordshire, was injured when the Suzuki GSX-R600 he was riding collided with a Ford Transit Connect Torneo on the A10 in Melbourn, at 2pm.

He was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital with serious, but not life threatening, injuries. The occupants of the Ford were not injured.

The A10 was closed in Melbourn, at its junction with Cambridge Road, until 6pm.

Police are appealing for witnesses to both crashes. Sgt Paul Tanner said: “The motorcyclists both suffered potentially life-changing injuries.

“I would appeal to anyone who saw either of the collisions, or the vehicles involved, prior to them, to call police.”

Anyone with any information should call the roads policing unit on 101.
