Ken Humphrey, of Wisbech, reached the milestone last Tuesday. To mark his ton, a party was held at Wisbech Town Cricket Club, where he started playing a staggering 81 years ago.

In his time at the club, he represented the first and captained the second team, before enjoying a long stint as umpire.

In recognition of his service, he joins his late wife Poppy in being awarded an honorary club life membership.

President Derek Wing said: “Ken started playing at club in 1934. I think he’s just about earned his honorary life membership!

“He played in the first and second team and was second team captain. Then for many years he umpired. He still has an active interest in the game and enjoys a pint in Spoons.

“He’s a remarkable man who has served the club for such a long time - he is very deserving of such an honour. His late wife Poppy was also awarded life membership for her role on the tea committee and as a hockey player.

“He’s a rare species, a thoroughly amusing man with a wonderful sense of humour.

“He was delighted with the party. His daughter Celia organised it. He was chuffed to bits, he thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Ken’s friend Martyn Wadsley said: “My dad went to club as a 16 year old 70 years ago and Ken was captain. He’s still going for a pint and a half in Spoons on Saturday afternoon and he always bursts out laughing when I turn up with my hats.

“He’s an inspiration to me. He was born in World War One and didn’t meet his father until he was three or four because of the war and he served in the Second World War.

“He’s not showing any signs of slowing down. He’s a remarkable man.”
