EMBARRASSED mum Kelly Long had to watch a film in court this week, showing her drunkenly laying on the ground in March Market Place, and then assaulting a police officer.

"She is not proud of what happened, and she recoils from seeing it again," solicitor Hugh Cauthery told Fenland magistrates on Wednesday.

"There is some degree of public humiliation in her eyes."

Long had been in an emotional state that day. Her father broke the news that he was suffering from cancer and she had domestic problems, said Mr Cauthery.

Long, 31, of Robingoodfellows Lane, had gone out for a drink with her boyfriend, but one drink led to another, and the result was the "unedifying episode" seen on CCTV.

Prosecuting, Nicola Ebbs told how police arrived in the early hours of the morning to find Long with blood on her head, in her hair, and on her clothes, and she was abusive.

Pc Laura Pearce went to arrest Long, and was pulled to the floor by her hair.

When restrained, Long lashed out, making contact with the officer.

Long was remorseful when interviewed, and too ashamed to watch the CCTV footage.

Mr Cauthery said Long was "very drunk". She accepted the hair pulling, but denied any intention of punching or kicking.

She had argued with her boyfriend and had little recollection of events.

Long, who admitted assaulting the officer on April 14, was given an 18-month conditional discharge, and told to pay £55 compensation to Pc Pearce, and £55 costs.
