ANNE Chambers presided over the latest WI meeting, attended by 23 members and three guests, Ann Lympus, Alice Menton and Elizabeth Shepard. Jill Johnson gave a report on the bowls roll-up.

A letter from Joan Tennant was read and transport to the 'cheese and not wine' evening arranged.

Speaker was Margaret Freston on 'Knock, Knock Who's There?'

Mrs Freston and her mother had entertained many strange characters over the years and she gave a talk about them, adopting the dialect of the many places she had lived. She was thanked by Jill Johnson. Hostesses for the evening were Carol Garcia and Sheila Scott.

The competition for a jar of lemon curd was judged by Mrs Freston the results were: 20 points, Gill Jolley; 19, Carol Turner; 18, Mavis Gamsby, Dorothy Yarker and Margaret Patterson. Raffle winners were Iris Miller, Carole Garcia, Jill Johnson, Anthea Hart, Anne Chambers and Carole Turner.

Speaker for the October meeting will be Celia Skidmore talking about life in a Japanese PoW camp.

The competition will be for 'Your favourite children's book'. Hostesses will be Sheila Scott and Chris Oakes.
