PRESIDENT Mimi Bashford welcomed members and three visitors to the first meeting of 2007 when birthday cards were given to Sue Almond and June Roper. The president presented cups and vouchers to the overall winners of competitions during 2006: 1 June Nicholas, 2 Ann Quincey, 3 Sandy Gilbert. Members were reminded of the dates of the spring council meeting on March 21 and the group meeting on April 21, both at March. Names were taken for a quiz evening at Ladysmith WI and another at Friday Bridge. Ruby Hurst read an e-mail from Phil Samways in Liberia, thanking members for the box of writing materials donated to a school there.

Speaker was Sonia Lucas, who told of diaries written by a woman imprisoned by the Japanese during the Second World War, the terrible conditions she suffered and her will to survive.

The raffle was won by June Roper, Ruby Hurst, Dena Old and Ginny Lindsey.

At the next meeting, on March 6 in St. Andrew's Hall (7.30pm), the speaker will be David Self, whose topic will be 'Behind the scenes of a TV quiz show'.
