JAMIE Houghton and Colin Racey were being "childish and stupid" when they threw stones into the River Nene at Wisbech and hit a yacht, a court heard.

The mahogany trim on Paul Maxim's craft was damaged, and will cost around £400 to repair.

Houghton, 19, and Racey, 25, admitted causing damage to the yacht on September 12, when they appeared at Wisbech courthouse on Tuesday.

"They were messing about, throwing stones into the river, but did not intend to cause damage," their solicitor Charlotte Winchester told Fenland magistrates.

"Their behaviour was childish and stupid."

Houghton, who is homeless, and Racey, of Norwich Road, Wisbech, were both given a 12-month conditional discharge and told to pay £60 compensation.
