A youngster walked out of an under fives nursery unsupervised at a setting that has been rated as needing improvement by Ofsted.

Ormitots in March has now added additional safety precautions including higher locks to the main door.

The nursery for two to five year olds at Young People March in City Road, officially recorded the incident of a child leaving unsupervised on April 25 this year.

Inspector Carly Mooney said that by doing so Ormitots had met their legal responsibilty and a full investigation had taken place into the circumstances.

The nursery has been criticised, however, for failing to notify Ofsted of a change in manager and been told that staff “do not consider more precise planning to provide a consistently stimulating environment outdoors to fully promote the learning of children who prefer to learn outside.”

They also noted that “staff do not consistently find out about children’s interests and achievements when they attend other settings to promote continuity and consistency in their learning.”

And it was noted that: “There is an obvious lack of resources. For example all the children share one ride in car.”

The report also noted that although there were weaknesses in leadership and management in most aspects children’s welfare was supported effectively.

Ormitots staff have been told that quality of teaching, learning and assessment needs improvement as do outcomes for children and welfare.

The nursery was given credit for having a good appreciation of the different backgrounds of children in their care and were praised for quickly forming emotional bonds to settle children into a daily routine.

It was also praised for good communication with parents.

The nursery opens on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays in term time only with session from 8.30am to 1.30pm.
