Members of the Fenland Youth District Council (YDC) joined with Street Pride to hold a clean-up event recently at the Sconce in March.

Two dozen adults and children attended the event, including five YDC members, Cllr Steve Garratt, Portfolio holder for Young People and Leisure and newly-elected district councillor, John Clark.

The clean-up began at 10am and by 12:15pm around 50 metres of graffiti-covered fence had been painted using brushes and a HPLC spray gun provided by the Council's graffiti-removal team. In addition, 15 bags of rubbish were collected along with an old car tyre and a rotary washing line.

The Sconce is an area of archaeological importance and Sarah Poppy from Cambridgeshire County Council gave a talk on why the area is significant. She led the volunteers around the field pointing out various earthworks and explaining why they were there.

Sophie Whitwell, chairman of the YDC Street Pride sub-group said: "A good day was had by all who attended. It was rewarding to see the difference our efforts could make to the area, let's just hope it stays that way!"

Cllr Steve Garratt said: "It is wonderful to see young people demonstrating their commitment to their local communities. The members of the Youth Council who attended are a fantastic role model for other young people.
