WISBECH racing driver Liam McMillan is celebrating after winning the first SaxMax championship.

He put in another superb performance at Oulton Park to clinch his eighth consecutive victory.

McMillan, 16, looks set for even greater success, thanks to one of the world's top touring car drivers.

It is fitting the inaugural SaxMax title went to Liam because he is the son of Paul McMillan, who established the formula last year and has used his contacts in motor sport to attract the help of FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) driver Rob Huff.

SaxMax was introduced by the 750 Motor Club as an affordable and accessible formula for 14 to 17-year-olds, and Wisbech drivers have figured highly.

Liam has been particularly impressive, winning every round of the season so far, and he will be looking to continue his unbeaten streak in the final two races of the season at Snetterton tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday.

However, the all-important title was clinched with the victory at Oulton and again, Liam was in unbeatable form to set the fastest qualifying time and lead the field from pole to take the chequered flag.

Liam's qualifying time of 2:11.74 put him 1.52 seconds ahead of his nearest title rival, Daniel Brown.

Once again, Daniel pushed Liam all the way in the final race and was never more than two seconds behind. However, Liam held his nerve and the racing line to win and celebrate the championship title.

Liam said: "I am really delighted to win the title. Everything has gone to plan this season and the car has been handling really well, particularly in the dry."

Looking forward to next season, Liam is already planning on moving onwards and upwards. He said: "I haven't really decided what formula I will be racing in but there are a couple of options." Liam is considering a move to Clio Cup or Seat Cupra racing next season and he will be able to take advice from one of the world's top drivers.

Liam has been taken under the wing of WTCC star Huff, from Newmarket since the first round at Donington - and Huff has certainly made an impression.

Liam said: "It is great to work with Rob and we have got together several times during the season at various tracks. He has taught me a completely different driving technique which has really helped me to improve.

"I really want to carry on racing and be the best I can. Hopefully, I will become a successful touring car racer in the future."

Huff, 25, who clinched his first WTCC race victory in Brno earlier this month and finished sixth in Turkey at the weekend, said: "I knew after one day with Liam that he had the natural talent to become a good driver.

"After giving him some guidance he was lapping just one second away from my times and I did consider retirement at that point! Liam has a lot of determination and has put a lot of work in. If he continues to mature and work hard there is no reason why he can't be where I am in three or four years.

"Both the Clios and the Cupras are well matched but the Cupras offer better opportunities to get in to touring car racing.

"Whichever class of racing he goes in to Liam can learn much more about set-up, mechanics and tuning his car to get the very most out of it."

Another Wisbech driver, Andrew Tibbs, 14, secured eighth place on the grid at Oulton Park but was forced to retire on lap five after moving up to fourth place.

Andrew will be looking to improve on his strong fifth place in the championship when he takes to the Snetterton track tomorrow.
