Runners covered just short of 40 miles as they braved the wet conditions for this year’s Hereward Relay and Ultra event.

March Athletic Club members started in Peterborough and follows the Hereward Way to Ely during the four-stage event on November 27, sponsored by Knowles Transport Limited.

Race organisers decided to re-route the first leg due to the amount of water that runners would encounter, but there was no avoiding the water on the final leg.

First team home was the C-Squad, who finished in three hours, 55 minutes and four seconds.

There were mistakes as the leg four runner of the next team, of hosts March AC, took a wrong turn and instead ran a shorter route, meaning his time did not count towards prizes or results for that leg.

The first ultra-runner home was Damian Elsdon in five hours, 35 minutes and 39 seconds.

A spokesperson for March AC said: "Without the support of volunteers behind the scenes who volunteer on the day to offer help by marshalling, time-keeping, tail running and managing the individual stages, this event could not take place.”
