March Bears brushed off a six-week absence from action with ease after a convincing home win.

The Bears returned to the Eastern Counties Division One West summit with a 59-0 triumph over St Neots II at Elm Road on January 7.

After Sam Chapman’s try handed March a fifth-minute lead, Callum Campbell added the extra points with a conversion.

Sam Bunting then crashed over for Bears, who last played on November 26, with the conversion added to make it 14-0.

There was a moment of mixed fortune for March when Kris Jones, who scored a try, had to be substituted when he sustained a knee injury.

But tries continued to flow, including an impressive solo effort from Will Paul after running from his own half to guide March into a 28-0 advantage.

Man of the match Jonny Larham notched his first try in five years, before Aaron Boxall saw a determined drive pay off to earn a 38-0 half-time lead.

March were suspect to handling errors from the restart, until normal service was resumed when Adam Munro intercepted a St Neots pass to go under the posts.

Cieran Brown added to the scoreline eight minutes later, as Chapman’s individual move gave him a second try of the day to wrap up a comfortable victory.

March face Bury St Edmunds III on January 14, 2pm.
