MARCH distance runner and Oklahoma State University freshman Dan Watts has won the newcomer of the year award at a championships in Kansas.

Watts described his run in the Big 12 Championships as "the best race I have ever won" after completing the 8k race in a time of 25:06.90.

The run put him in 13th place and, as the first freshman to cross the line, Watts was presented with the prestigious award.
